First blog post

“We are drowning in filth. When I talk to anyone or read the writings of anyone who has any axe to grind, I feel that intellectual honesty and balanced judgment have simply disappeared from the face of the earth. Everyone’s thought is forensic*, everyone is simply putting a ‘case’ with deliberate suppression of his opponent’s point of view, and, what is more, with complete insensitiveness to any sufferings except those of himself and his friends.”

-George Orwell

This blog is the marriage of my love for intellectual honesty embodied by Orwell, Paine, Hitchens and my literal marriage to partner, best friend Nita, who also happens to be an accomplished Teacher and, more importantly, a mountain girl who religiously lives her Mountain Morals and who taught me the real meaning of ‘Mountain Intellectual Honesty’.

Mountain Intellectual Honesty  is telling the truth in simple, plain language, and applying The Golden Rule. It is an old Appalachian code that is lived today. It’s what I aspire here to do and in doing so model to readers what that might look like, applied to our country, by our community leaders,  religious leaders, and to the extent possible, our politicians.

Hitchens wrote of his intellectual hero, George Orwell, the epitaph he would have wished for himself (David Frum,  Atlantic):

“By his determination to seek elusive but verifiable truth, he showed how much can be accomplished by an individual who unites the qualities of intellectual honesty and moral courage.”

This blog aspires to impeccable objectivity in it religious, political and history discussions, and seeks to embody and memorialize those with the moral courage to tell the truth.

*Lawrence Rosenwald in  George Orwell: Into the Twenty-first Century  says when Orwell refers to “…forensic” he means ‘it’s evasiveness nature’.
